Amdile Simelane, Nqaba Peter, and Jason Smith have earned their first-ever ODI calls-up to the South Africa team for the forthcoming series in the United Arab Emirates against Afghanistan and Ireland. Three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) between South Africa and Afghanistan are slated to begin in Sharjah on September 18. Three ODIs and two T20Is versus Ireland will occur in Abu Dhabi starting September 27.

All-rounder Jason and leg spinner Peter had made their T20I debuts earlier this year, in August 2024 and May 2024, respectively, against the West Indies. Jason has only participated in one game and scored six runs, whereas the former has participated in two matches and claimed three wickets.

Simelane, though, is making his debut with the international team. The 21-year-old all-rounder, a member of the South Africa Emerging Tour to Zimbabwe in August, has been deemed a high-potential player. He has also played for South Africa A in a one-day series against Sri Lanka A.

Pacer Lungi Ngidi, on the other hand, has been included in all three squads after recovering from a right calf injury. He was not part of the three-match T20I series against West Indies in August.

Head coach Rob Walter stated that the goal of selecting youth players is to increase the pool of players in anticipation of significant upcoming ICC competitions like the home World Cup in 2027. These tours would expose the young and fringe South African players to international circumstances.

We have decided to offer opportunities to both the underperforming players and those who have shown promise in the last few weeks and months. The management made this conscious decision to expand the pool of players available for selection in the lead-up to the big ICC competitions in the next 18 months, with an eye toward the 50-over World Cup in 2027.

On September 14, a flight from South Africa will arrive in the UAE.
